Why German Shepherds

All dogs possess superior scenting capabilities, but ARDA utilizes the German Shepherd because it has a combination of physical and behavioral characteristics which makes it well suited for the broadest range of disaster and search scenarios.

Originally used for herding sheep, the German Shepherd has a high degree of physical endurance, intelligence, and trainability.

Its double coat, which consists of harsh outer guard hairs and a downy undercoat, provides insulation and protection against cold and hot temperatures, rain and snow, and heavy brush.

Search dogs must successfully pass basic obedience training and temperament tests. A stable, friendly temperament is essential in the search dog and is reinforced through heavy socialization with humans and other dogs. SARDOM's dogs are not only working dogs; they are family pets.
