Wilderness

Each dog and handler team should be certified as an operational wilderness team. To ensure each team is preapred for a search they must successfully complete the following basic wilderness search problems under the supervision of an evaluator.

a. Open Field
b. Trail
c. Light Brush
d. Dense Brush
e. Night

The trainee is to work on the basic wilderness search problem skills during regular training. When the trainee is considered proficient at the skill level necessary to a basic wilderness search problem, the trainee will arrange to be evaluated and checked off on that problme. Basic problems are designed to build on previous problem skills and are to be checked off in the order listed above. Evaluation factors of easier problems automatically carry over to successively harder problems until the dog and handler have learned to coordinate all necessary skills to efficiently, safely, and effectively operate on a search. The final wilderness operational readiness evaluation pulls all of the factors together.
